CLAY: 1973-2015
Looking back, I loved to dine on handmade plates, serve tea in an original pot, and surround myself with beautiful table-top accessories that were both affordable and elegant. From 1973 to 2015 my studio was focused on creating "something special" for the table. I made plates and pots and established a product/design studio that kept me always creating work and connecting to people who loved to dine on art.
Clay is the perfect medium for exploration. It is extremely independent. It bends to the touch and provides results dramatically in contrast to one’s expectations. It demands respect and with time, will cede beautifully to the will of the artist. Working in response to the natural properties of the medium always led me to a new experience. As I developed over the years, Tile became the perfect canvas providing the space to explore the techniques needed to create unusual and highly personal ceramic paintings. I was inspired by moments of reflection, passing dreams and conversations which ignited my imagination. My goal was to capture the “essence” of an experience, an environment, a memory, and from that information, create a tile painting with an unusual and luminescent surface.
I was always in search of a new approach and with all the tiles I had created, it seemed inevitable that breaking them all was the next step.
Mosaics is the art of creating images with an assemblage of small pieces of pretty much anything. Using clay shards, glass, mirror and found items, I would attempt to tell my story, express a memory, respond to my environment and pull it all together in a way that invited delight.
Though my ceramic work is no longer being produced, the years of loving to make ART continues as I now approach Paper in a similar way. EXPLORE! ENJOY! And trust your process.
